James (not his real name) was a Youth Service client for two years. When he first enrolled he had a complex array of mental health, family and anger issues which the school social worker was very concerned about. In addition, James struggled to engage at school.
Over the two-year period his youth coach built a relationship with him that enabled him to feel safe and unpack some of his struggles. We helped him gain his learner licence and his NCEA Level 1 and 2. James has come a long way and is now feeling positive about his family situation.
He is currently employed part time to mentor a younger student with additional needs in the school. Teachers comment that he is an inspiration to this student and an excellent role model. James is now working to gain his Level 3 credits and is planning to study at AUT as an engineer.
