Heads up Mentoring

We provide a mentoring service for youth referred by police, Oranga Tamariki and other agencies.   Mentoring is not about providing answers or directives, but rather being a trusted adult standing firmly in the young person’s corner, helping them to make good decisions about the difficult circumstances they may be facing.

We provide a mentoring service for youth referred by police, Oranga Tamariki and other agencies.   Mentoring is not about providing answers or directives, but rather being a trusted adult standing firmly in the young person’s corner, helping them to make good decisions about the difficult circumstances they may be facing.   In our experience, mentoring gives the young person a stress-free space to lift their head and discover the best of themselves.  Heads Up mentors are not counselors, but we work closely with people who are.   So, if a young person needs more specialised support, we can refer them on, all the while staying connected for as long as they need us.

Some of the features of Heads-Up Mentoring:

  • A weekly individualised mentoring session consisting of a range of multi-level activities and interactions based on the young person’s strengths and interests.
  • Opportunities for the young person to unpack their “stuff’ in a natural and unpressured manner.
  • Simple facilitation techniques to help the young person analyse their situation and explore possible options and solutions.
  • Goal-setting to help the young person move toward their hopes and dreams.
  • Space for the young person to simply be a young person.
  • Unhurried time for fun and laughter, usually with some food as well!
